The Tar Heel Van
NCMA Announces Economic Impact
took place in Wilmington, North
Carolina. The numbers
represent the latest statistics
generated from NCMA
members reporting their 2004
revenue.
"While interstate household
moves arriving in North Carolina
greatly exceed moves out of our
state, the following figures
support the fact that North
Carolina is an increasingly
popular destination for families."
The American Moving and
Storage Association figures
indicate that in North Carolina,
Asheville has one of the highest
interstate inbound rates (versus
outbound) of nearly 70%
followed by Charlotte at 67%,
Jacksonville at 64%, Raleigh at
59%, and Winston Salem at 58%.
North Carolina's population
growth is impacting the state's
economy in more ways than
one. The North Carolina Movers
Association (NCMA) reports
revenues in excess of $42.6
million from 57,300 household
moves within the state, with
additional revenue of $10 million
in ancillary services that include
packing and "accessorial"
charges related to those same
moves. "Moving in North
Carolina is big business, and
accounts for a significant amount
of revenue generated within the
state," says NCMA
representative Tom Hunnicutt,
Jr.
The NCMA announced its
economic impact figures as part
of its 52
nd
Fall Convention which
Approximately 45% of
household moves occur within a
four month peak period from
May 15 to September 15 each
year. Moving rates are highest
during that time period and
many movers are operating at
maximum capacity. Not
surprisingly, rates are typically
lowest during the months of
January and February when
movers often experience their
least revenue production.
The North Carolina Utility
Commission (NCUC) has
established some of the
country's toughest moving
standards, making North
Carolina one of the most
stringently regulated states in the
nation. Approximately 230 of the
270 certificated carriers in
North Carolina belong to the
NCMA, and are dedicated to
implementing high standards and
ethical treatment of the
consuming public as North
Carolina's share of the moving
business increases.
The NCMA is a trade
organization that provides
training and promotes education
of the NCUC rules and
regulations, enabling members to
provide a higher quality service
to the moving and consuming
public. Annual awards presented
during this week's convention
include a College Scholarship
Award, The James T. Dorman
Distinguished Service Award,
and Mover of the Year Honors.
